Japanese Modular Builder SEKISUI Opens Its First Canadian Home in Burlington

Burlington's newest tenant at 955 Maple Ave. is a big one — Japanese manufacturer SEKISUI has opened its first Canadian location, producing modular steel-frame building systems designed to speed up construction and scale quality housing across the region.

Word on the street — well, on Maple Ave. specifically — is that Burlington just landed a pretty big get. SEKISUI, a major Japanese manufacturer, held its official grand opening on Wednesday, August 20, officially planting its Canadian flag at 955 Maple Ave. The Burlington outpost operates as SEKISUI Canada Modular Solutions (CMS) and will be producing modular steel-frame building systems — a departure from the parent company's chemical manufacturing roots back in Japan. The concept is clever: much of a building gets constructed in a controlled factory setting, then shipped and assembled on-site, cutting down timelines and keeping quality consistent. "Our approach is rooted in reproducible quality, ensuring the same high standards regardless of who builds a project or when it is delivered," said CEO Masatoshi Kifuji. The launch drew a who's-who of Burlington's political and business community, including councillors Kelvin Galbraith and Rory Nisan, MPPs Natalie Pierre and Effie Triantafilopolous, MP Karina Gould, and Burlington Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Terry Caddo. Mayor Marianne Meed Ward was in Ottawa for the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference but sent remarks along with Councillor Galbraith. So why Burlington? SEKISUI — which worked with the City of Burlington, Invest Ontario, and Toronto Global to make the Canada move happen — cited the city's strong logistics network, local talent, and solid transportation links. Caddo had a simpler answer: "When companies come here, they can go anywhere in Ontario but they often choose Burlington. The quality of our workforce, the work-life balance we have here and what Burlington means as a community is what attracts businesses here." SEKISUI has also committed to supporting net-zero building practices, which fits nicely with the region's growing demand for housing built smarter and faster. Councillor Galbraith called it a proud moment: "We're excited to see what comes next as this facility comes to life and production gets underway."
