50+ mm of Rain Possible for Burlington-Oakville This Weekend

Environment Canada put Burlington–Oakville on notice for a potentially soggy weekend, with more than 50 mm of rain possible from Saturday, August 22 into Sunday morning. Flooded roads and low-lying areas are a concern — here's what to watch for.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the Burlington–Oakville area, flagging the potential for locally significant rainfall — more than 50 mm — through the weekend. The heavy rain was expected to arrive on Saturday, August 22, with showers and thunderstorms developing over southwestern Ontario in the morning before pushing into the Greater Golden Horseshoe in the afternoon. The timing through early Sunday, August 23, meant multiple rounds of precipitation were possible for some areas. A key caveat: rainfall amounts will vary considerably across the region. Not every corner of Halton will see the same totals — there's still meaningful uncertainty about exactly where the heaviest rain falls. The usual safety reminders apply: don't drive through flooded roadways, stay away from low-lying areas, and keep an eye out for washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts. If you notice water pooling on roads, turn around. Keep an eye on Environment Canada alerts at weather.gc.ca, and if you spot severe weather, you can report it to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tag #ONStorm on social media.
